SVAT CV800 Portable DVR Review
Here is one of the smallest digital video recorders ever that is designed to accommodate surveillance cameras. The SVAT CV800 literally fits in the palm of your hand and with the size of the device the first thing you may wonder about is its video storage capacity. Rather than using a hard drive to store video the SVAT CV800 uses an SD card, a low capacity SD card is included with the CV800 keeping its retail cost low. Providing your PC has an SD card reader you can use it to copy video footage recorded by the CV800 to your PC’s hard drive.
Would fitting the CV800 with a USB port rather than an SD card slot have made the SVAT more popular? The majority of PC owners have PC’s fitted with USB ports but you can always get an SD card reader for a couple of dollars, this effectively turns your PC’s USB port into an SD card reader. The SVAT CV800 can record approximately eight hours of video footage when a 1GB SD card is inserted into the device. The DVR uses MPEG4 video compression and can record at a maximum video resolution of 704*480 in NTSC only.
The DVR can accommodate one surveillance camera, it has an RCA input for attachment. The system also has 1 channel RCA for audio an has a maximum sampling rate of 44.1Hz. Video is recorded in ASF format so its can be played back on a PC using numerous video players such as VLC player or windows media player. As you would expect from a DVR the CV800 is capable of playback and it has 1 RCA channel for viewing footage on an external display. The DVR has a Linux based operating system but its not designed for professional applications and has no network features.
The SVAT CV800 can record video at 30 frames per second and you can attach SD cards that have up to a 32GB capacity. Video recording is activated when you set a schedule or when the DVR detects motion on your attached surveillance cameras. You have the option of plugging the DVR into the main with the included power supply or alternatively you can use two AA batteries.
