Lorex L224-161 4 Channel Security DVR Review
The Lorex L224-161 is a security DVR suitable for monitoring homes and businesses, the DVR can accommodate up to four surveillance cameras. Recording smooth video from each of the cameras you attach to the system is possible as the L224-161 has a maximum recording rate of 120 FPS. To get the DVR recording at this rate you will have to set to record at resolutions of 352*240, the resulting video is quite pixelated.
Setting a camera attached to the DVR to record at 30 frames per second is adequate for recording smooth video and at this setting you can increase the resolution. At maximum the Lorex DVR can record video at a maximum resolution of 720*480 and at this setting the video quality improves significantly.
Three different video compression methods are available to choose from, you can select CIF, MPEG4 or MJPEG video compression. The DVR has four different levels of recording quality you can select and these consist of best, high, normal and basic. The DVR is capable of recording in both PAL and NTSC, surveillance cameras are attached to the system through one of its four BNC connectors.
For storing video the L224-161 has a 160 gigabyte IDE hard drive, you can change the hard drive if needed. At maximum the DVR can accommodate IDE hard drives that have a maximum storage capacity of 500GB. You can reduce hard drive space usage by scheduling recording or setting the DVR to record only at times when motion is detected on your surveillance cameras.
Four alarm inputs are fitted to the DVR and it also has one alarm output, when the system detects an alarm has been activated it will start recording. You can also use the DVR to communicate with people around your surveillance cameras, the back of the device has one audio input and one audio output.
Unfortunately the DVR does not have a CD or DVD writer but it can be connected to broadband or LAN. Networking the DVR gives the user many more alternatives when it comes to sharing or storing video footage. For networking the DVR Lorex have included an Ethernet port and the system is compatible with PPPoE, TCP/IP, DHCP and DDNS network protocols. The L224-161 also supports PTZ cameras so you can control the position of the cameras through the DVR’s user interface.
