If you want to keep the costs of setting up a CCTV system to a minimum the Lorex L164-81 Security DVR may suit your needs. The Lorex L164-81 comes with an 80 gigabyte hard drive for storing the video from your surveillance cameras. You have the option of increasing the storage capacity of the DVR as it has two IDE hard drive bays. At maximum you can upgrade the systems hard drive space to 500 gigabytes by installing two 250 GB hard disks. If you were to record video at 30 FPS in high resolution without upgrading the hard drive you can record about 36 hours of video before data is overwritten.
The L164-81 has a maximum video resolution of 720*480, you can attach up to 4 CCTV cameras to the DVR. When monitoring the video from your surveillance cameras with the DVR you can do so in full screen mode. Alternatively you can set the video output to quad mode allowing to monitor four cameras at once. To keep the L164-81 secure, two keys are included with the DVR for unlocking the hard drive bays. A password system is also in place and you can set the DVR to require a password in order for it to stop it recording.
Two RCA video outputs can be found at the back of the Lorex L164-81, the system also has a 2-pin terminal for alarms. Video can only recorded in NTSC mode as opposed to PAL with the DVR and the system has the ability to detect camera outages. Three different recording modes are available, these are scheduled recording, alarm activated recording and manual recording. To control the DVR there are numerous buttons on the front of the device and it also includes a remote control.

Even though the L164-81 lacks a few features it is ideal for anyone who wants to do nothing more than set up a few surveillance cameras.
