Here is one of the smallest digital video recorders ever that is designed to accommodate surveillance cameras. The SVAT CV800 literally fits in the palm of your hand and with the size of the device the first thing you may wonder about is its video storage capacity. Rather than using a hard drive to store video the SVAT CV800 uses an SD card, a low capacity SD card is included with the CV800 keeping its retail cost low. Providing your PC has an SD card reader you can use it to copy video footage recorded by the CV800 to your PC’s hard drive.
Would fitting the CV800 with a USB port rather than an SD card slot have made the SVAT more popular? The majority of PC owners have PC’s fitted with USB ports but you can always get an SD card reader for a couple of dollars, this effectively turns your PC’s USB port into an SD card reader. The SVAT CV800 can record approximately eight hours of video footage when a 1GB SD card is inserted into the device. The DVR uses MPEG4 video compression and can record at a maximum video resolution of 704*480 in NTSC only.
The DVR can accommodate one surveillance camera, it has an RCA input for attachment. The system also has 1 channel RCA for audio an has a maximum sampling rate of 44.1Hz. Video is recorded in ASF format so its can be played back on a PC using numerous video players such as VLC player or windows media player. As you would expect from a DVR the CV800 is capable of playback and it has 1 RCA channel for viewing footage on an external display. The DVR has a Linux based operating system but its not designed for professional applications and has no network features.
The SVAT CV800 can record video at 30 frames per second and you can attach SD cards that have up to a 32GB capacity. Video recording is activated when you set a schedule or when the DVR detects motion on your attached surveillance cameras. You have the option of plugging the DVR into the main with the included power supply or alternatively you can use two AA batteries.

The SVAT GX5204 is an all in one covert recording device, the system consists of a pinhole camera and a portable LCD monitor. The SVAT GX5204 is far cry from being the most high tech surveillance system on the market but it does offer a cheap an easy solution for setting up a few digital cameras. The best feature about this mini system is its portability, the system works with four AAA batteries or with a rechargeable battery pack. While using the GX5204 at home or work you can plug it into the mains with the AC power adapter included.
As the GX5204 is wireless you can set the camera up in one room and then take the monitor to another. The wireless frequency of the system is 2.4 GHz and it also operates on three optional channels within the 2.4 GHz range. You could use the camera to monitor a sleeping puppy or keep an eye on a pot you have on the stove. You don’t need a PHD to get the system up and running, there is very little to be configured. You can even hear what is going on in the room you choose to set up the camera as it includes a microphone.
The camera included with the system is quite small so it can be attached to numerous places without being noticed. The camera included can record video in light levels as low as 2 lux, the camera is adequate but you can use others with the system if need be. The cameras has a ¼” CMOS sensor and the cameras maximum wireless range is 300 feet. The camera included (WSE103C) does not have motion sensors but the GX5204 is compatible with motion sensor cameras and it has an alarm.
The monitor for the system is 2.5 inches, it can record at resolutions of 480*284 pixels and you can connect up to 3 cameras to it. It’s a pity the GX5204 doesn’t record video, perhaps SVAT can add a storage device and USB port to a future model of the system. To get past this issue SVAT have included an AV port to the GX5204 so you can connect it to a DVR or VCR. Even though the system doesn’t record on its own its still very handy device for monitoring the rooms in your home or business.
