The Grossmont School district in San Diego has been used to field test a new surveillance system produced by Sony. Incidents such as the shootings at the University of Illinois and similar tragedies experienced at Grossmont prove that security needs to be addressed. It turns out that the Grossmont School district has seen a distinct fall in anti social behaviour and property damage due to the Sony e-surveillance system.

To set up a surveillance system within their institutions the Grossmont school district sought the expertise of Sony. When the system was first set up it consisted of the necessary hardware and software required to test its efficiency. The system consisted of a 720 gigabyte networked Sony server running Sony Real Shot Manager software. The software is available now but it requires a license for each camera attached to your system. The Grossmont system initially had only four cameras attached to it, they used the IP based Sony SNC-RZ30N cameras with pan tilt and zoom capabilities.

Warren Williams holds the position of assistant superintendent for IT services at Grossmont and has experienced the systems efficiency first hand. He found the installation of Sony’s e-surveillance system resulted in a reduction in the misuse of school resources. The Sony e-surveillance system has the ability to keep members of staff informed about alarms triggered without the need to be stationed at a monitor for hours. The e-surveillance system is compatible with email and mobile phone technology and can send a message to them when motion is detected on the cameras attached to the system.

Warren Willams found that training staff to use the Sony e-surveillance system was straightforward and more cameras have been added to the system. The Sony e-surveillance system has also been installed in the largest airport in the Netherlands. Lelystad Airport is a vast area and it was decided a surveillance system was required that could monitor the airports main and surrounding buildings. Again it has been found that the installation of the Sony e-surveillance system has proved to be of benefit. The airport has cut its costs as they have found less security personnel are required due the e-surveillance system.
